We produce RDX Type II, as well as even more advanced qualities -- based on the Bachmann process.

RDX is a cost efficient, powerful high explosive produced in large industrial quantities. As a relatively insensitive, stable, and safe-to-handle energetic material, it is useful in a variety of applications -- both for military and civilian end products.

RDX consists of opaque/transparent crystals with typical crystal sizes ranging from less than 10 microns to more than 1000 microns. Its melting point is approximately 200 °C and its crystal density, 1.81 g/cm3. At maximum density, its detonation velocity is 8,700 m/s with a detonation pressure approximately 33 GPa. RDX is manufactured in the same process equipment as HMX.

RDX

RDX is manufactured as Type I and Type II, as well as Reduced Sensitivity-RDX (RS-RDX). Large Industrial scale manufacturing of RDX secures high redproducability and fit-for-purpose customized qualities. Our experienced staff can assist with reliable supplies to destinations in Europe and overseas.

 

RDX Crystals

We deliver RDX according to US Military Specification MIL-DTL-398, The German TL 1376-802, NATO STANAG 4022 or specific customer requirements.

We can deliver the following three basic qualities of RDX;

  • RDX type II (standard quality)
  • High purity RDX that also fullfills Type I requirements and is characterized by narrow crystal size distributions and extremely good processing properties.
  • RS-RDX (Reduced Sensitivity) can be delivered for Insensitive Munitions.

Crystal sizes and size distributions can be tailored to the most sophisticated customer demands. Micronized RDX (d50 approx 5µm) is produced in large quantities for propellant applications.

For improved processability, we can deliver spheroidised crystals.  Crystal morphology and the sensitivity can, within certain limits, be adapted to customer needs.

RDX Formulations

We produce a broad spectrum of RDX based compositions adapted to customers’ production technology, sensitivity, and performance requirements.

Pressable Compositions

Such compositions contain from 1 – 15 % by weight of binder material.  Commonly used binders are different types of waxes, thermoplastics and thermoplastic elastomers, some of these with a plasticizer. Energetic binders are also available. The compositions are delivered in bulk as dry, free-flowing granules, adapted to different pressing techniques and equipment.

We deliver pressable compositions according to military specifications such as Comp A-3, HWC, and PBXW-17.  We can also deliver according to specific customer requirements, and have in-house developed compositions such as DPX-1.

Melt-Cast Compositions

These compositions are based on TNT, or alternatively DNAN, as binder material for RDX. This product group is called Hexotols or Comp B, for military purposes.  Viscosity, processing properties and composition can be adjusted by optimizing particle size and particle size distributions.

Cast-Cured Compositions

For these compositions, we can deliver different premixes where a plasticizer is used as a desensitizing agent for the RDX crystals.  Typical plasticizers used are DOA, DOS and IDP, among others.  We deliver standard compositions such as CXM-7 which is used in PBXN-109.  We can also deliver RDX that is desensitized by energetic plasticizers.

Extrudable Compositions

We also produce RDX formulations with binder systems designed for extrusion. Examples are Comp C-4 and our in-house developed DPX-9 and DPX-10
