Thermally stable products such as HNS are attractive in civilian markets such as aerospace devices and Oil & Gas exploration. HNS is also well known for its use in seismic charges in the Apollo program.

HNS is a less powerful high explosive than RDX and HMX. It is heat resistant -- with a typical melting point of 316-320 °C. HNS is safe to handle and relatively insensitive to impact and friction.

HNS consists of yellow needle-like fine crystals with a maximum density of approximately 1.7 g/cm3. Its detonation velocity at max density is approximately 7000 m/s, with a detonation pressure of about 25 GPa. Its critical diameter is < 1 mm which makes it suitable in initiation systems. HNS is also used as an additive in melt/pour TNT-containing explosive formulations.

Chemring Nobel has produced HNS since 1989, but in limited production capacities.

HNS

Thermally stable products such as HNS are attractive in civilian market such as aerospace devices and Oil & Gas exploration. HNS is well known for its use in seismic charges in the Apollo program.  It is also used in a variety of fuses and as an additive in melt/pour TNT containing explosive formulations.

We use a two-step process for the synthesis of HNS, which produces a pure product with high melting point. We can deliver limited amounts of either crude HNS or recrystallized as Type II according to WS-5003J. We are using an organic solvent for the recrystallization process that produces HNS with good flowing and handling properties.  HNS has to be registered in the EU’s REACH program by 2018.  Further information is available on request.
